Shillong: As tourism gradually reopens in the state of Meghalaya, an awareness initiative – Clean Sohra Campaign – was undertaken on Saturday in a bid to maintain the beauty of the tourist hotspot, and promote responsible tourism.
The Campaign kicked off with a cleaning drive from Umtngar bridge towards Sohra. Several organisation several like Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) and Green Tech Foundation participated in it.
Chairman of Cleaning Sohra Campaign, Alan West informed that the main objective of the initiative is to bring in a behavioural change in the minds of people regarding littering places.
“It’s an organisation of concerned people of Sohra who has come together and expressed the need to maintain Sohra clean and green. In the past last 3-4 months we’ve seen that when we travel from Sohra to Shillong or Shillong to Sohra there is an eyesore along the road in the sense that the place is filled with litter. It is a concern and today we decided to clean,” said West.
He added, “And we want to send an awareness to the public that come to Sohra to enjoy the beautiful place but also have a sense of responsibility. Since Sohra is known for its natural beauty so if this beauty is disturbed by such eyesore then this should not continue. This is not just a cleaning drive but an attempt to spread awareness. Littering is a crime and they should be responsible enough to maintain the USP of the place.”
West urged the people of the state and tourists not to litter tourist spots and carry a disposable bag and dump all the waste in that and take it back home and dispose it properly.
During the cleaning drive it was observed that most of the garbage was alcohol bottles and chips packets. To add to the pain of cleaning, these bottles were found broken in most of the spots.
