A knife attack at a church in the Mediterranean city of Nice on Thursday is under investigation by the French anti-terrorism prosecutors. The attack resulted in the killing of two people along with injuring several many.

The attacker beheaded a woman and killed one more at the church and the city’s mayor has described it as an act of terrorism. Christian Estrosi- the Mayor said on Twitter that the attack happened in or near the city’s Notre Dame church. He added that police officials were also able to detain the attacker.

After the arrest, the assailant, who is believed by the police officials to have been working alone, was taken to a nearby hospital. He was allegedly injured during the arrest. Although the reason for the attack remains unclear, France is under high alert for terrorist attacks.

According, to media reports police armed with automatic weapons, had put up a security cordon around the church after the attack, many ambulances and fire service vehicles were also present at the scene.

This incident comes to the fore as France is reeling from the gruesome beheading of a history professor in the street of a Paris suburb. Samuel Paty, the history professor was killed earlier this month by a man of Chechen origin.

It is alleged that the attacker wanted to punish the history teacher for showing his teen students a cartoon caricature of Prophet Mohammad as a part of a class on freedom of expression. This attack had sparked wide-scale outrage in France. Many teachers and lawmakers’ union hailed the slain history teacher’s courage for confronting challenges such as taboos in French society. According to them, freedom of expression is one of the core tenets of democracy.

Ever since the killing of Paty, many French officials backed by ordinary citizens have re-asserted the right to display the caricatures and images at marches in solidarity with the slain teacher. This then prompted an outpouring of anger from the Muslim community with many governments accusing Emmanuel Macron- French President of pursuing an anti-Islam agenda.
