IG (Prisons) M Kharkrang during a briefing on Wednesday

Shillong: The Inspector General of (Prisons), M Kharkrang on Wednesday informed that since the start of COVID-19 pandemic they have released 1,176 prisoners in Meghalaya.

Speaking to media persons, Kharkrang said that proper scrutiny is done before the release.

“We have released 11 convicts and 7 others on remission till date,” informed Kharkrang. A total of 1,158 under-trial prisoners were also released in Meghalaya.

“We don’t release prisoners who are involved in serious crimes like – rape, POCSO and murder cases. We are looking only at reviewing cases that carry lighter sentences,” says Kharkrang

The release followed an order by the Supreme Court in March which directed each state government to constitute a high power committee. This body was tasked with identifying the class of convicts or undertrials who could be released on parole or interim bail to decongest jails during the pandemic.
