Aizawl: Mizoram reported 34 new cases including two infants of aged 3 months and 10 months old on Tuesday as the state government declared lockdown in the capital city of Aizawl. The lockdown will continue till November 3.
Aizawl entered lockdown starting from 4:30 am on Tuesday in light of the recent surge of COVID-19 cases with untraceable contacts and symptomatic patients in the state especially within Aizawl municipal area is of grave concern for the public health authorities, as this is considered as an indication of community spread, stated the Mizo government in an order stated on Monday.
In the light of the present situation, it is necessary to impose fresh restrictions within Aizawl Municipal area to curtail unnecessary activities so as to break the chain of community transmission without hindering essential services, the order added.
As per the order, entry and exit routes to Aizawl Municipal area will remain barricaded and only those stranded before the lockdown was announced along with those having permission granted by state home department, and Local Level Task Force (LLTF) in the case of medical emergency will be allowed to enter or exit the region.
However, transport of essential commodities will be allowed and Lengpui airport will remain open although flight passengers would have to seek permission from the government through mFlight on mCOVID-19 application, the order further said.
Even residents would not be allowed to come out of their houses without prior permission from concerned authorities.
All education institutions, religious places, outpatient departments of hospitals and clinics will be closed. However, online classes will be conducted as per their regular routine.
All shops except those dealing in essential commodities and pharmacies have been ordered to shut down during the lockdown.
Street in the state capital wore a deserted look as only vehicles of those exempted were seen plying on the road, police said.
The number of attendees in funeral and marriage reception is limited to 35. And for pending construction, work is permitted with maximum of five workers.
Out of the 34 newly reported cases, 30 cases were reported from Aizawl district, 2 from Mamit district and one case each was reported from Siaha and Lawngtlai districts respectively, the official said.
The tally includes nine minors, including two infants, one Assam Rifles personnel and an 87-year-old man were among the newly infected 34 people.
Currently, here are 315 active patients in the state while a total of 2,212 people have already recovered from the virus.
Altogether, 1,06,307 samples have been tested till date, including 1,762 on Monday.
