Kohima: During an election campaign on Thursday, Nagaland health and family welfare minister, S Pangnyu Phom said that besides Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Lirimong Sangtam, other candidates in fray to the bye-poll for 60 Pungro-Kiphire assembly constituency seat are like “orphans”.
This bizarre statement coming from the state health and family welfare minister has many baffled. Considering the stigmatisation orphans face in the society, NGO’s working for the upliftment of children believe the health minister should have been sensitive.
This is the statement of health & family welfare minister, “other candidates in the fray for the bye- election to the 60 Pungro-Kiphire Assembly Constituency are like orphans without parents, and are rudderless that will soon fade away , and be gone with the wind; because they doesn’t have any owners to take them on board. Yet, he said, Lirimong has the ruling government as his rightful parent.”
An indication that only people with parents are successful in this world. A senior research fellow who wants to remain anonymous says,”Steve Jobs was adopted so were many historical figures. Some of the most successful people in the world have been orphans.”
Research has shown that orphans are at increased risk for mental health problems. Researchers stressed the need for more research in low-income countries to identify which factors of being an orphan may lead to psychological distress.
Appealing for support, the health minister also said that with BJP as the largest political party which has many programs and schemes to be implemented, it needs a “good and smart leader to represent them in the Assembly”, the BJP’s media officer informed.
While in Anatonger Village, minister for planning and co-ordination, land revenue & parliamentary affairs Neiba Kronu assured and pledged that the “ruling government shall do all it take to help and assist the PDA consensus candidate” to represent the constituency in the state Assembly.
Urging the people of the district not to miss the golden opportunity, Kronu said that the ruling government is in need of such “young and smart leader to usher in development in the area”.
The minister also said that Kiphire being an aspirational district, has lots of natural resources and minerals to be explored and tapped for the benefit of the district.
He added that the people of Pungro-Kiphire “shall reap maximum benefit only if they have a good leader who can truly love and serve them with conviction” and that the ruling government’s consensus candidate Lirimong Sangtam is the “complete package”. Further, he called upon the BJP and NDPP to work together.
Lirimong Sangtam also appealed for support from the people to help him “win to serve them”.
Besides Lirimong Sangtam, the other candidates in the fray for bye-poll in the constituency are Khaseo Anar from the Congress party, and K Shellumthong, T Yangseo Sangtam, and Kiusumew Yimchunger as independent candidates.
