Agartala: Bodies of COVID-19 victims are now being handed over to families in compliance with the new COVID-19 guidelines in Tripura.

Dr Debasish Roy, medical superintendent of Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, informed that the family members can now get a chance to pray and perform the last rites in compliance to the COVID-19 guidelines.

The West district magistrate Dr Shailesh Kumar Yadav issued a notification on October 8 allowing the GBP medical superintendent to hand over the body of corona victims to the families.

The decision came following numerous requests by families to hand over the dead bodies in accordance with the central government guidelines issued for burial of the dead bodies.

The administration was cremating bodies of the corona victims. The process of burying the dead body at Battala crematorium is going on following the necessary hygiene rules given the infection. Therefore, there is no possibility of performing the funeral according to the religious rites.

The union health ministry has recently allowed the state governments to hand over corona victims to the families following the standard operating protocol (SOP). However, there is a provision to hand over the corpse to the family. Only if the families make an application following all the guidelines of the health ministry, the bodies are handed over.

The West district magistrate has asked the medical superintendent of GBP hospital to consider taking necessary steps in this regard.

“The body is being handed over to the next of kin wrapped in a leak-proof plastic body bag decontaminated with 1 % sodium hypochlorite solution. The bodies of several Corona victims have already been handed over to relatives”, Roy said.

Roy confirmed that the body of the victim could be handed over to the family if permission is granted to the application made following specific guidelines issued by the ministry of health.

Tripura has so far reported 328 COVID-19 deaths at a rate of 1.11 per cent, while the total confirmed positive cases stands at 29,468 with a positive rate of 6.83 per cent. The recovery rate stands at 90.09 with 26,527. The active cases stand at 2,587.
