Mumbai Police arrested Bharat Raval, 22, the prime accused in the murder of Devji Maheshwari, a Dalit Lawyer. According to the investigating team, Raval stabbed Maheshwari on September 25 just days after he had a heated argument with Maheshwari over his social media post which were ‘Anti-Brahmin’.
Devji Maheswari was murdered in his office in Kutch district’s Rapar town on September 25. His family had even refused to take his body and perform the last rites, till all the nine accused named were arrested.
Maheswari, was also a senior activist of the All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation. He used to write and share posts frequently on Facebook, which were about atrocities against Dalits and critical of Brahminism. The last post on Maheswari’s page was a video of BAMCEF National President Waman Meshram saying that Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes were not Hindus.
Raval, used to work at a printer repairing shop run by Mahesh Hanat alias Mahesh Bhoja Patel in Mumbai’s Malad area is a native of Rapar town as well. Raval escaped to Mumbai with the help of his friends Prakash Bera and Rajesh alias Viram Devda after murdering Devji.
According to the crime branch officer, these posts did not go well with Raval who is a Brahmin and warned the former to avoid sharing such posts, the two had been having repeated arguments over Maheswari’s Facebook posts. Raval had threatened him at his office once and asked Maheshwari not to create trouble since both of them are from the same village. The Mumbai crime branch had nabbed him the next day after he eloped to his Malad shop.
As per the reports, the police has so far not found any evidence against the other eight persons named by Maheshwari’s wife Minaxiben in the FIR, while, Hanat, Bera and Devda are currently in judicial custody,
The reports also stated that, during interrogation, the audio recording retrieved from Raval’s mobile phone validates the claim, where he confessed that he had a tussle with Maheshwari over the latter’s anti-Brahmin posts and therefore he murdered him.
