Guwahati: Chief ministers of Assam and Mizoram have held talks over phone calls to de-escalate the tensions prevailing at the Assam-Mizoram border. The phone call comes at the wake of the decision taken up by Mizoram cabinet on Sunday to ramp up security along the border between the two states.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also apprised the situation to the union home minister Amit Shah, who has extended his ministry’s support to in defusing the situation along the border of the two neighbouring northeastern states.
Sonowal took to twitter to notify his followers about the phone call with Mizo counterpart speaking about the border rift.
“Talked to Mizoram CM Shri Zoramthanga over phone about the incident at Assam-Mizoram border. We agreed to maintain the law & order situation of the area so that peace returns immediately. We resolve to work together for maintaining brotherhood between both the states,” tweeted the CM of Assam.
To which Zoramthanga has replied by welcoming the Sonowal’s approach and has hoped that such move can further facilitate peace between the two states. “Noble, much awaited approach from a great leader. May this kind intervention brought peace to the region and strengthen our bonds. Thank you Shri Sarbananda Sonowal ji,” he posted on twitter.
Tensions have increased along the Assam-Mizoram border area, as miscreants torched houses on Saturday night, injuring people on both side. The incident reportedly took place in Lailapur in Cachar district.
This comes less than a week after Assam and Mizoram officials held talks and decided to setup police outposts along the disputed border area to avert future standoff.
