England captain Eoin Morgan takes over the captaincy of the Kolkata Knight Riders from Eoin Morgan ahead of the team’s match against the Mumbai Indians on Friday.
KKR’s CEO Venky Mysore confirmed the same through a press release on Tuesday.
According to the release, the former skipper Dinesh Karthik informed the KKR management that wished to handover the team’s captaincy to Eoin Morgan, with a view to focus more on his batting.
The CEO of KKR, Venky Mysore said , “we are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes. We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice captain, is willing to lead the side going forward. DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner”
The Kolkata Knight Riders thanked Dinesh Karthilk for his contribution as the team’s captain over the past two and half years and wished Eoin Morgan the best for the tournament going forward as the new skipper.
Karthik was appointed as the captain of KKR ahead of IPL 2018, replacing the side’s most successful and long standing captain Gautam Gambhir, after the latter joined the Delhi Capitals(then Delhi Daredevils). Karthik captained KKR for two full seasons in the IPL, as he guided his team to the playoffs in 2018 and a fifth-place finish in 2019.
In the current season of the IPL, Karthik led KKR to four wins in the first seven games before deciding to step down.
KKR today takes on the Mumbai Indians for their reverse clash at the Sheikh Zayed Criket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
