Guwahati: Demanding imposition of ban on cow slaughtering across the state, members of some leading Hindu organisations, including the Bajrang Dal staged demonstrations, and stopped vehicles carrying beef meant for animals at the Assam zoo here for couple of hours on Monday.
To press for their demands, the Hindu activists managed to stop the vehicles carrying beef along with other meat for consumption of animals in the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden here for more than 4, 5 hours.
The organisations demanded that cow-slaughtering as well as feeding of beef to the zoo animals should be completely stopped across the state.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, range officer of the Assam State Zoo said, “We are not feeding animals cow meat illegally. We have a committee, including three veterinary doctors who conduct a thorough study and research before deciding upon what to feed the animals of the Assam state Zoo, and whatever we feed them are according to the food list of the Central Zoo Authority of India.”
The range officer further said that, the lions, tigers and the leopards of the zoo prefer cow meat only.
After a long discussion between the members of the demonstrating organisations and the Assam State Zoo range officer, the vehicles carrying the meat were allowed to enter the zoo.
However, the range officer thanked the media organisations for helping them handle the issue.
Speaking to the media, he said, “I thank the media for helping us, if the media did not come, maybe they would have not allowed us to take the vehicle in, which might have hit the animals’ meal schedule miserably.”
Earlier in the day, Hindu activist Satya Ranjan Borah also opposed the feeding of zoo animals with beef.
