Guwahati: Mahindra & Mahindra’s highly popular XUV500 is all set to enter its second generation early next year. The carmaker has been doing some aggressive testing for the new model for quite some time now, with several spy pictures of the 2021 Mahindra XUV500 doing rounds in the social media.
The new-generation SUV will witness some significant changes inside-out, along with a new set of powertrains. According to media reports, the new-generation XUV500 is likely to be equipped with level 1 autonomous technology – the Advanced Driver Assistance System(ADAS), which will make it the first Indian car to have that facility. It will also be the most affordable car to have this feature.
The spy images of the new-gen SUV reveal provisions for image sensors and radars, which will allow the autonomous features. Mahindra & Mahindra has tied up with South Korean firm Mando Corporation in 2019, to acquire the autonomous technologies for its cars.
The South Korean firm will provide camera for ADAS, radar and DCU(Domain Control Unit) to Mahindra for the autonomous system. This tech will be specially optimised for the uneven Indian roads, the presence of any stray animals as well as Big Data.
At the Auto Expo 2020 in Delhi, the Indian carmaker showcased a Mahindra Marazzo with the ADAS, which promised features like adaptive cruise control, driver drowsiness detection, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and blindspot detection, attention detection and cross-traffic alert system. It is to be noted that the emergency braking system is effective only in situations when the vehicle is under 40-50kmph.
Other safety features expected on the new-gen XUV500 include front and rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, multiple airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
Powering it will be the all new 2.0-litre turbocharged mStallion petrol and the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engines from the new-gen Mahindra Thar. While the mStallion petrol is likely to deliver around 187bhp of power and 380Nm of torque, the mHawk diesel is likely to deliver 180bhp of power with 380Nm of torque. Both the engine options will have automatic and manual gearboxes on offer.
The new-gen Mahindra XUV500 will underpin an all-new platform and its design is inspired from the Mahindra Funster concept, which was first displayed at the 2020 Auto Expo in February.
The price range for this car is expected to be somewhere between Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
Mahindra & Mahindra tractor company has already presented its first-ever driverless tractor produced at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai.
This technology could be implemented across its range of tractors from 20 HP to 100 HP. This opens up new opportunities in large scale farming.
