Experienced Chennai Super Kings batsmen made surprising surrender against Kolkata Knight Riders as both the teams dominated the first half of their batting only for the bowling team to come back in the later half, where the KKR bowlers’ comeback proved better in the night.
Deciding to bat first after winning the toss Kolkata Knight Riders sent in a new opener Rahul Tripathi along with Shubhman Gill. Back to his favoured position at the top, Tripathi was brilliant at the top as he scored 44 runs in the powerplay, and then carried on with the innings when the star-studded middle order of KKR failed to fire. The KKR innings didn’t have much to show, apart from Tripathi’s innings of 81 off 51 delveries, who scored almost the half of the KKR score. The Chennai bowlers bowled brilliantly during the second half of the innings, as they restricted KKR to 167/10 at the end of their 20 overs, after being in a comfortable position of 93/2 at the 10-over mark.
The Chennai Super Kings had a similar story during the first half of their innings, as they cruised comfortably reaching 90/1 at the 10 over mark. It was a pretty much one-sided match until, Ambati Rayudu holed out at long on in the 13th over.
With 69 runs needed off 47 deliveries with eight wickets in hand, the innings still seemed pretty much in the Super Kings’ control, but the Knight Riders managed to pull the match back, as they strangled the CSK batting, after Sunil Narine trapped Watson lbw in the 14th over.
Curran smashed one straight six off Narine, but the late assault from CSK went in vain, as Russell bowled some brilliant back-of-length deliveries, preventing the CSK batters to get away at the death. Jadeja finished off the game by hitting 6, 4 , 4 in the last three deliveries of the game, but they fell short of the KKR target by 10 runs, even though they lost only five wickets.
KKR now sit third at the points table with six points from five games.
