“The bamboo flower-rice will be an economically profitable product, and people can become self-reliant with it. I appeal to all the entrepreneurs to take initiatives in marketing this variety of rice”, Deb said.
He also said that the state government has been trying to create income generation avenues using bamboo which is abundantly available in Tripura.
“We have made bamboo cookies and water bottles in the past and rice is being made by milling the bamboo flowers, which is very helpful against diabetes and fat control”, Deb added.
Tripura grows 21 species of bamboo in around 3,246 sq forest area and planned forestry. The BJP-IPFT government in 2019 launched a plan to bring another 15,000 hectares area under bamboo cultivation through incentivized method and involving rural development, forest department of Tripura government.
Of the total plantation, about 80 per cent of the bamboo is Muli bamboo and measures to plant bamboos along the rivers, roads have been taken by the state government to boost the economy of the farmers.
Tripura Bamboo Mission director, Prashant Goyal said that the bamboo rice is full of nutrition, vitamins and it has high demand in the market, being sold at Rs 2000-3000 per kg when produced in large quantities.
He also appealed to the people to not waste bamboo flowers since it is very rare and has high demand in the market which can provide income for entrepreneurs.
“You can’t manufacture it artificially. The purpose behind the launching was to sensitize people, since in Tripura there are a large number of people who are living closely involved in bamboo plantation. If any plantation starts flowering, cultivators should not waste them, instead collect it, this will help them financially. From a single bunch of bamboo plantation 2-3 kg rice can be produced”, Goyal said.
