Tinsukia: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam has arrested the Lakhimpur divisional forest officer Jadav Chandra Nath, Assistant Conservator of Forest Jasimuddin Ahmad red-handed demanding and accepting the bribe from the complainant on Monday.

A 10-member team of the ACB led my Pinaki Mitra, later arrested forester Pranab Jyoti Dutta and recovered over Rs 9 lakh along with several indiscriminating documents during subsequent searches carried out at North Lakhimpur and Guwahati.

The arrest came almost three months after the ACB arrested the forest ranger of Jonai range division, Makhan Islam, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 55 thousand from the owner of a furniture showroom in the neighboring Dhemaji district on the pretext of arresting him if he fails to pay Rs 2 lakh.

According to sources, the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 1.85 lakh from the complainant to return his detained tractor and timber. “According to the deal, negotiated and finalized, the victim had to pay a bribe of Rs 50 thousand as advance and the remaining amount of Rs 1.35 lakh at the time of releasing the tractor and timber.”

“After the complainant approached the ACB police station in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti Corruption, Assam, a trap was laid down and the duo was arrested while accepting bribe money kept in two envelopes of Rs 25 thousand each,” the source said, adding, “The bribe money has been recovered from the possession of DFO Nath.”

The source said, during an investigation, another accused forester Dutta was arrested by the ACB team.

“The ACB has registered a case under section 7(a) of PC Act (as amended in 2018) and will produce the accused at a special court in Guwahati on Tuesday.
