3 NE states account for 25% of suicides in Central Armed Police Forces in 2019: Report

Guwahati: Total 36 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) suicide were recorded last year, of which 25% (9) are from Northeastern states, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

As per state and UT wise suicides, Rajasthan recorded 5 suicides, followed by Tamil Nadu (4), and Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland, Tripura & Delhi UT recorded 3 suicides each in 2019.

NCRB said that these eight states together accounted for 75.0% (27 out of 36) of total suicides in CAPFs in the country.

A cause-wise analysis of suicidal deaths of CAPF personnel revealed that 38.9% (14) were due to family problems and 3 were due to service related issues. And 1 each ended life due to marriage related issues, and fall in social reputation respectively.

While the reasons are 8 suicides are not known, 9 ended their lives due to other causes.

Who are CAPF?

CAPF refers to seven central security forces of the country under administrative control of Ministry of Home Affairs. They consist of Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Assam Rifles (AR) and National Security Guard (NSG). CAPFs play a vital role in guarding borders and assisting Centre/state governments in maintenance of internal security and in curbing other illegal/unlawful activities.
