After having lost three matches in a row the Chennai Super Kings made a terrific comeback in the tournament, as they rode on a massive 181-run unbeaten opening partnership between Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis, to thrash the Kings XI Punjab to a ten-wicket defeat at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
Deciding to bat first after winning the toss, the Kings XI Punjab got off to a decent start with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal adding 61 runs for the first wicket in quick time, before Mayank Agarwal was dismissed for 26 by Piyush Chawla in the first ball of the ninth over. Mandeep Singh looked good in his short stay of 27 runs, as he scored 20 runs off just nine ball from Piyush Chawla’s bowling, but was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja in the 12th over, as he hit one straight to Ambati Rayudu at extra-cover.
Nicholas Pooran joined skipper Rahul in the middle and he took Jadeja apart smashing him for back-to-back boundaries and a monstrous six in his final over, as Rahul continued to set himself up for the slog overs.
Just as Pooran(33) and Rahul(63) were looking to accelerate, Shardul Thakur dismissed both of them in two consecutive deliveries in the 18th over.
CSK bowled particularly well in the death, as the KXIP managed to score only 37 runs in the last four overs, eventually getting to 178/4 at the end of their 20 overs.
Coming out to chase a competitive total, the Chennai Super Kings just roared their way, as Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis stamped their authority right from the beginning. Watson and Faf went on to score the highest ever opening partnership for CSK, as both stitched an unbeaten 181-run-partnership. du Plessis and Watson remained unbeaten on 87 and 83 respectively as they finished off the chase in grand style in the 18th over, thus registering a thumping victory over the Kings XI Punjab by 10 wickets, and moved up to the sixth position from the bottom in the points table.
Meanwhile in the first game of the day, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 34 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi
