Assam: Backlash after posting of cop charged under POCSO Act as SP

Amidst the outrage over the alleged rape murder of a Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh, a 22-year old girl from Assam have allegedly been gang raped near Padallam near Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu.

The victim was allegedly lured by 5 men on the pretense of a job offer. They called her to Tiruppur from Coimbatore.

According to reports, the woman approached a man named Rajeshkumar from Palladam, for employment. He asked her to meet him at Tirrupur and promised her a job. Based on the assurance she travelled to Palladam and met him at his residence on September 28.

Rajashekhar allegedly introduced her to his younger brother, Raju (21) and family at his house. He then told her that he could not find a job for at the moment. He then asked his brother to drop her in his two-wheeler to the bus stop to get a bus back to Coimbatore.

Instead Raju took her to a deserted plot, where two his acquaintances Kavinkumar, 23, Anbu, 21 and two others raped her.

A case was registered at the Palladam All Women Police station on September 29 against the six accused under sections 147 (Punishment for rioting), 376 D (Gang rape), 384 (Punishment for extortion) and 109 (Punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence and where no express provision is made for its punishment) of the Indian Penal Code. The All Women Police in Tamil Nadu arrested Raju, Kavinkumar and Anbu a day later on September 30 and remanded them in judicial custody.

The Superintendent of Police, Disha Mittal said that two special teams have been deployed to search and arrest the other three accused who are currently on the run.
