Purushottam Sharma, Madhya Pradesh Additional Director General (ADG) was relieved of his duties on Monday, September 28. This was after the shocking video of him beating his wife went viral on social media.
The video showed Sharma thrashing and pushing his wife to the ground all while two unidentified men try to pull him away. The cop kept on hitting his wife even as she cried out aloud for help. As of now, the MP police are yet to file an FIR in the case.
MP Home Minister, Narottam Misra said that due action will be taken when a formal complaint is filed. Even the National Commission for Women wrote to MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan demanding intervention and appropriate punishment.
Allegedly, the incident occurred after Sharma’s wife caught him in a compromising condition with another woman. While speaking to a leading news daily, the ex-ADG questioned the authenticity of the allegation and also asked why his wife was still living in his house.
According to his statement, they were married for 32 years and in 2008 the wife had complained against Sharma. Sharma added that since 2008 after the complaint she is still living in the house, enjoying all the facilities, and even traveled abroad all on his expenses. He said that had his nature been abusive his wife would have complained earlier so hence, this is a family dispute and not a crime.
Meanwhile, the 1986-batch IPS officer was previously caught in the honey trap scandal when he was the Special DG of Cyber Cell and Special Task Force. He even accused VK Singh, the then DG, of “maligning the image” of MP police.
