A sensational knock of unbeaten 132 off just 69 deliveries from the Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul, formed the centerpiece for the Kings’, as they reached a mammoth total of 206/3 in their first innings and eventually crushed the Royal Challengers Bangalore by a huge margin of 97-runs, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Put into bat first earlier in the day after losing the toss, the Kings XI Punjab got off to a steady start, with the openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal putting on a decent 57-run-partnership for the first wicket, before Yuzvendra Chahal coming in to bowl his very first over, bamboozled Mayank with a delightful googly in the seventh over, getting him bowled for 26.
The batsmen that followed Mayank did not contribute significantly to the Punjab scorecard, but played a great second fiddle, as their skipper Rahul just pulverized the RCB.
After scoring his first fifty in 36 deliveries, Rahul took just 26 deliveries for his second as he brought up his second IPL century, the first as a skipper. As the Punjab innings was nearing its closure, Rahul just took apart the RCB bowling attack as he scored 42 runs in the last nine balls he faced, and thus taking his team to a massive 206/3 at the end of their 20 overs.
Coming out to chase a steep total, the RCB boys tried to shuffle their batting order by promoting the young wicketkeeper from Western Australia, Josh Philipe to No.3, but it did not work at all, as they had a disastrous start being reduced to 4/3 in the third over, after the big West Indian left arm seamer Sheldon Cottrell bounced out RCB’s opener Devdutt Padikkal and their skipper Virat Kohli for one run each, and the in-form Mohammed Shami dismissed the promoted Josh Philippe lbw for a duck.
The RCB innings never really recovered the massive early set back and were eventually bundled out for mere 109 in 17 overs, as the two young legspinners of KXIP, Ravi Bishnoi and M Ashwin exploited and got through the right-hander heavy RCB batting line up. Both Bishnoi and Ashwin ended with impressive figures of 4-32-3 and 3-21-3 respectively, as they registered their first victory of the season with a massive 97-run win.
