Guwahati: Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) displayed a clinical performance, as they registered a comprehensive victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), beating them by 49 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, thus clinching their first even win in the United Arab Emirates.
Put into bat first after losing the toss, the Mumbai Indians got off to an absolute flyer. Despite losing their opener Quinton de Kock to the young Shivam Mavi in the second over itself, the Mumbai Indians had the best start in the tournament so far, with a brilliant 90-run-partnership of just 40 deliveries between skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav for the second wicket.
The partnership was looking dangerous for the KKR when a slight misjudgment in running between the wickets brought an end to the partnership, as Suryakumar chanced a risky second and was caught short of his crease to be dismissed for 47.
Although there was no significant contribution in the batting order post Suryakumar’s dismissal, it was the skipper Rohit, who held his ground strong and smashed the KKR bowlers to all parts of the ground scoring a superb 80 of just 54 deliveries. Apart from the skipper, some quick cameos from Saurabh Tiwary(21 of 13), Hardik Pandya((18 of 13) and Kieron Pollard(13 of 7) helped Mumbai Indians to reach a match-winning first innings total of 195/5 at the end of their 20 overs.
Coming out to chase a pretty big total, the KKR innings never seemed on track as they started very slow and lost their openers early on as well, reaching just 25/2 at the end of five overs. A short 41-run-partnership for the third wicket between skipper Dinesh Karthik(30 of 23) and Nitish Rana(24 of 18) gave some hope to the KKR fans, but even then it was not as quick as the situation demanded, and the game just kept slipping away from the Knights. With Andre Russell and Eoin Morgan failing to deliver, it became all the more difficult for KKR to have a chance back in the game. A late flurry of shots from KKR’s big buy, Pat Cummins gave the KKR fans something to cheer towards the end. Cummins had a rather forgettable day with the ball giving away 49 runs in just three overs, but he had quite a memorable day with the bat as he emerged as the highest scorer for the KKR. Cummins scored a quickfire 33 in just 12 deliveries smashing Bumrah for four sixes in the last over, thus shortening the margin of defeat for the KKR.
