GUWAHATI: The alleged prime suspect of the Assam Police SI recruitment case, former DIG of Assam Police, PK Dutta, is still absconding while the crime branch of Guwahati police arrested Kushal Das and apprehended around five persons in connection with the case till Thursday morning.
Sleuths of the CID raided the residence of Dutta and three of his hotels in Guwahati till the wee hours on Thursday. However, Dutta managed to escape with his family members before the arrival of the investigating team.
Earlier, the Assam Police team also questioned Assam BJP leader Diban Deka for his alleged involvement in the leakage of question paper.
Leader of the youth wing of the Assam BJP Diban Deka, in his Facebook page clarification, has said that he was associated with the company responsible for conducting the examination for Assam Police. He also alleged that some of the senior-level officers are involve in the scam.
In his clarification, Deka has also confirmed that to save his life, he has already shifted to a different state. “When the situation comes under control, I will inform everything to the media,” he said.
The investigation is being carried out in connection with the leakage of question paper of written test for sub-inspectors in Assam Police ahead of the commencement of the examination.
The crime branch also arrested Jugami Brahma, an employee of the State irrigation department on charges of demanding money against providing job. Based on the information gathered from her phone call record, police later arrested Kushal Das from Sualkuchi of Kamrup district.
Meanwhile, sleuths of the crime branch carried out multiple raids in Ganeshguri and Gitanagar areas of the city on Wednesday evening and detained around five persons.
The CID on Wednesday arrested Hirakjyoti Barua, who was a candidate of the examination, from Nagaon in connection with the case. He has been booked under Section 120B and 409 of IPC and Sec 66B of IT Act.
Earlier, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who is also state home minister, directed the chairman of State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB) Pradeep Kumar to conduct re-examination for the posts of sub-inspector in the Assam police. The exams were cancelled minutes after it had commenced due to leaking of question paper.
Sonowal directed this while taking stock of the developments following the cancellation of the exam which was scheduled on September 20, 2020, in a review meeting.
He also asked the department concerned to take stringent action against those involve in the case.
