Royal Challengers Bangalore won their season opener by 10 runs against SRH on Monday Credit: IPL Twitter

The inexperience of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)’s middle order was clearly exposed on Monday night, as they managed a spectacular collapse from 121 for 2 in the 15th over to being all-out at 153 in 19.4 overs, chasing a modest total of 164 in heavily dew affected venue, thus handing the Royal Challengers Bangalore a winning start to their IPL 2020.

Put into bat after losing the toss, the Royal Challengers Bangalore got off to an absolute flyer, with the young debutant from Karnataka, Devdutt Padikkal showing some absolute class, as he raced away to a classy half-century on debut taking on every SRH bowler, thus making the Aussie opener at the other end, Aaron Finch play a second fiddle in the innings.

Paddikal (56 of 42) was eventually dismissed by Vijay Shankar in the last ball of the 11th over after giving RCB the perfect start they would have wanted. Padikkal’s dismissal was immediately followed by the dismissal of Aaron Finch, who was plumb lbw to Abhishek Sharma in the first ball of the very next over, thus leaving RCB at a strong position of 90/2 after 11.2 overs.

The quick dismissal of both the openers brought Virat Kohli and Ab de Villers out in the middle. Virat and AB made very subdued partnership of 33 runs in 28 deliveries, which largely consisted of some outstanding running between the wickets, mainly as the pitch had slowed down significantly. Virat (14 OF 12), in his only boundary attempt of the night, holed out on a slower on from T Natarajan and was dismissed in the last over of the 16th over.

De Villers on the other end, after the dismissal of their skipper, showed his class once again, as he converted his slow start of 14 runs in 13 deliveries, into an eventual 30-ball 51, thus taking RCB to a respectable total of 163/5 at the end of their 20 overs. De Villers enroute to his 51, reached his 200th six in the IPL for the RCB, taking his overall tally of T20 sixes to 399.

Coming out to chase a challenging total of 164 on a slow pitch, the Sunrisers had a pretty unfortunate start as they lost their skipper David Warner runout in a freakish manner via a deflection off the Bowler Umesh Yadav’s hand, which was a crisp straight drive from Jonny Bairstow in the second over of the match.

Following Warner’s dismissal, the Sunrisers Hyderabad had a pretty good passage of play, as Bairstow looked in sparkling form, with a great support from Manish Pandey at the other end, they put up a 71-run partnership for the second wicket, before Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Manish Pandey in the last ball of the 12th over.

It was in the 16th over of the innings when Yuzvendra Chahal came in to bowl his last and brought RCB right back into the game. Jonny Bairstow well set at 61 of 43, trying to hit a six off Chahal, the only bowler he hadn’t got on away with, was bowled and was followed by a golden duck from Vijay Shankar the very next ball.

The dismissal of Jonny Bairstow in the 16th over started the monster collapse for the Sunrisers Hyderabad as they lost the last eight wickets for just 32 runs in a span of 26 deliveries, thus handing the Royal Challengers Bangalore a win by 10 runs in their season opener. Indian speedstar Navdeep Saini looked good with his consistent pace around 145 Kph throughout the match, as e bowled brilliantly in the backend of the innings picking up two wickets with two spearing Yorkers.

Chahal finished off with match-winning figures of 3/18
