Ukhrul: Armed with spade, hammers and other construction tools, over 100 youths in Ukhrul district in Manipur embarked on voluntarily fixing potholes and repaired the dilapidated roads amid the spread of COVID-19 infection.
At least 103 youths of Harkui Kathe locality from the hill district headquarters participated in the road improvement programme carried out by a local youth organisation.
The major filling of potholes worked was carried out starting from Nimshimri society area, Khampasom to Harkui Kathe locality covering the major lifeline connecting to the market, approximately a 1 km stretch of road connectivity.
Speaking with EastMojo, Ashang Shimrah, one of the local youths, said, “We raised funds in three days and carried out the major road repair along the stretch connecting to the main market.”
No assistance or scheme was taken from the state government or concerned authorities but it was purely done through crowdfunding and donations from well-wishers, amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh, said Shimrah.
We thanked the locals, well-wishers and district autonomous council for their immense contribution towards the programme and make the road walkable and motorable, he added.
The only locality road connecting to the main market area becomes deplorable owing to the slushy roads and number of potholes creating hurdles to pedestrians and vehicle users, especially during the monsoon season when rain is pounding hard in the hill district. Since the concerned authority failed to deliver, local youths were prompt to take up the challenge towards better roads.
We are a little upset since we couldn’t touch the entire local area for it is beyond our ability with the limited resources we have. But we hoped that youths from other localities can get inspired and bring some changes in days to come, added Shimrah.
