Guwahati: Delhi Police on Saturday confirmed that a Chinese woman and her Nepalese associate were arrested for alleged involvement in a spy ring involving a Delhi-based journalist Rajeev Sharma.
The freelance journalist who was arrested on September 14 has been accused of passing classified information to China in return for a huge sum of money. A case has been registered under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) against Sharma, the Nepalese, and Chinese nationals for spying for China.
According to Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell), the Special Cell arrested Rajeev Sharma for passing sensitive information that had relations to Chinese intelligence. Additionally, the Chinese woman and her Nepalese associate were allegedly paying Sharma a large amount of money routed through shell companies for the “sensitive” information.
Delhi Police also added that a huge amount of money was the driving force behind the journalist for his actions. Moreover, a huge number of mobile phones, laptops, and other “incriminating/sensitive” materials have also been recovered.
Rajeev Sharma is a resident of Pitampura. During his arrest, they were able to find various classified defense-related documents in connection with a case under the Official Secrets Act.
He was produced before a city court on September 15 and after that, he was sent to police custody for six days. In the past, Sharma has worked for a news agency and a Punjab based English daily in the past.
