UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich crushed Schalke 8-0 with a hat-trick from Serge Gnabry in the Bundesliga season opener on Friday.
With biggest opening win in the history of Bundesliga, the Champions League winners showed that they had lost none of the sharpness they possessed in the Champions League victory less than a month ago.
Bayern started off with a bang with Gnabry scoring a goal in the fourth minute of the game, which eventually turned out an once-sided affair, as Schalke, without a league win since January, seemed pretty helpless against the Champions League winners.

Soon after Gnabry scored Bayern’s first goal, Leon Goretzka drove a low shot past the Schalke keeper to score their second in the 19th minute, followed by Bayern’s last season top scorer Robert Lewandoswki scored the third for Bayern in the 31st minute with a penalty. Lewandowski now becomes first player to score in 10 successive matches against the same Bundesliga opponents.
Going into the half time, Bayern had taken a healthy lead with 3-0 on the board, but it was after the half-time that, Bayern just dismantled the Schalke team.
With just two minutes into the second half, Gnabry scored Bayern’s fourth from Sane’s assist. Repeating the same, Gnabry brought up the fifth goal for Bayern, as he found the nets for the third time in the day in the 59th minute, before Thomas Muller made it half a dozen for Bayern just 10 minutes later.
Leroy Sane then caped his superb debut for Bayern as he completed a fine finish from a counter attack scoring the seventh goal of the day for Bayern in 71st minute, before the young substitute Jamal Musiala drilled in the eighth goal in 81st minute, becoming the youngest player ever to score in league for Bayern at the age of 17 years.
Bayern manager Hansi Flick was emphatic after his side’s massive win in the season opener.
“It was superb from us. Before the game we wanted this to be a game that would define where we are at this stage and my players did it very well,” the Bayern manager said after the game.
