Kohima: After the Kohima District Truck Owners and Drivers’ Union (KDTODU) alleged the collection of cash by Nagaland Police at the check gates, the Kohima police responded that the allegations are “non-existent and baseless”.

The KDTODU earlier alleged about the unabated taxation on vehicles, especially trucks, by various law enforcing agencies, unions/federations/associations and underground outfits at different points from Dimapur entry gate till Imphal.

The Union had stated that the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kohima, had on October 23 last year constituted an Enquiry Committee to check illegal collections of cash at check gates and the highway in and around the State Capital and that the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kohima had verbally assured KDTODU that he would ask the Police not to collect cash from vehicles/trucks at the check gates.

While the Union regretted that none of these worked as the collection of cash by Nagaland Police at the check gates continues and the formation of the Enquiry committee failed to bring any positive results, through a press note, it also said that it had lost all hope on the assurance given by both the DC and SSP.

Reacting to this, the Kohima Police throough an official statement said that the police viewed the allegations by the KDTODU and found that the allegations are non-existent and baseless. Kohima District Police has only one check gate at Khuzama, the inter-state border of Nagaland and Manipur, said the police.

The police claimed that when SSP Kohima confronted of the allegations, both the president and the general secretary of the KDTODU stated that the allegations were made on the complaints by some truck drivers although it could “not pin point any specific incident”.

The General Secretary of the KDTODU informed SSP Kohima that he did not attend the meeting and had no knowledge about the press release as published by KDTODU, even though it appears in the media that he is a signatory, the police said.

It informed that the Sr SP Kohima had called for a meeting with the KDTODU on September 18 at 11:00 am for necessary clarifications.
