Shillong: In a second protest held in Shillong on Wednesday, the the Joint Action Committee of North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) has now alleged that vice chancellor Prof SK Srivastava’s inefficiency has led to huge losses in the university.
Professor Xavier Mao said that the vice chancellor had returned Rs 44 crore to the UGC due to non-utilisation of funds, adding that due to the late submission of income taxes, a fine of Rs 22 crore was also imposed on the university.
“We have lost Rs 66 crore due to his inefficiency. He returned Rs 44 crore to UGC for non-utilisation of funds. Due to late submission of the income tax, Rs 22 crore has been fined on the university incurring a total loss of Rs 66 crore. He has brought more loss to the university,” said Prof Mao.
He also added that the agenda for the day’s protest was the same. “We don’t want him to be here for an extra day and we don’t want him to be a VC in any other university because we don’t want other universities to be destroyed by such incompetent and vindictive VC,” said Prof Mao.
According to NEHU Ordinance, for calling an academic council, the VC has to give 15 days’ time, but in the case of adjourned meeting or for emergency meeting even 2-3 days’ time is fine.
Prof Mao stated that the present VC, who is under home quarantine, just informed on Tuesday to hold an academic council on Thursday which is another violation of the NEHU ordinance and protocol of Meghalaya health guidelines.
Another allegation levelled against the present VC by the committee was that they don’t have a chancellor for the last five years, and this solely is the mistake of the present VC, because he has to call the executive meeting and recommend three names to the visitor, which is the President of India, but he never took any step.
