India saw 125 extremely heavy rainfall events this Sept, Oct: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal and northern interior Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat in next four to five days.

A low pressure area lies over west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh coast likely to move west-northwestwards towards central India across Telangana during next 2-3 days, IMD said.

The monsoon trough lies south of its normal position from Ganganagar in Western Rajasthan to the Bay of Bengal. Its eastern end is likely to remain to the South of its normal position till September 17. An off-shore trough lies off south Gujarat coast to north Karnataka coast.

Under the influence of the above low pressure area, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls occurred over Coastal Andhra Pradesh during the past 24 hours.

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with Isolated heavy to very heavy falls are very likely over Vidarbha on 15 September and over Marathwada on 16 September, IMD predicted.

The IMD also informed that widespread and heavy rains in the peninsular region continued till September 17 due to the favourable conditions. However, there is no indication of monsoon withdrawal from north-west parts of India.

K Sathi Devi, the head of national weather forecasting centre, said that of monsoon withdrawal from the north-west of India, while another low pressure area is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal by September 17 which they would assess the models to be certain about this.

The monsoon withdrawal is likely to begin after anticyclonic flows are established and moisture reduces significantly over the region, the IMD official said.
