Guwahati: Naomi Osaka lifted her second US Open Championship Trophy and the third Grand Slam in three years, as she emerged victorious against the veteran Victoria Azarenka in the US Open final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Japanese Tennis ace defeated Azarenka in a swift 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, to become the first woman in 26 years to win the US Open final after losing the first set.
Osaka, started off the match playing pretty poorly in the first set as she kept missing shots and digging herself a deficit, eventually losing the set 1-6 to Azarenka. It was from the start of the second set that Osaka lifted her game as Azarenka couldn’t sustain the start she got. Finally, Osaka pulled off a dashing comeback victory, thus winning the final of the US Open 2020 by 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
It had been a quarter-century since the last time the woman who lost the first set of a US Open final ended up winning it, with, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario doing it against Steffi Graf back in 1994.
22-year-old Osaka, added to her trophies from the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Australian Open, while with Sunday’s loss, it was a straight 0-3 for Azarenka in the US Open finals, as she lost to Serena Williams in both the 2012 and 2013 finals.
“I gave everything that I could today on the court,”, Azarenka spoke via video chat in her post-match conference. “Today, it’s a loss. It doesn’t change for me much. Of course, I would have loved to win Today. It is what it is.”, Azarenka added.
