Dominic Thiem defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to reach his first ever US Open final on Saturday

Dominic Thiem defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, as he steamed into the final of the US Open on Saturday.

Thiem overcame an ankle injury, a set point in second and third sets, and some relentless counter attacking from Medvedev to reach his first ever US Open final, as he eventually outlasted the Russian with sets of 6-2, 7-6(7), 7-6(5) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Thiem, through to his second consecutive Grand Slam final after finishing runner-up in this year’s Australian Open, is awaited by Alexander Zverev in the finals, scheduled to be played on Monday.

“I’m really looking forward to that. We have such a great friendship and rivalry. It’s amazing that we’re going to face each other in a Grand Slam final.”, Thiem said after reaching the final.

Zverev, seeking his his first Grand Slam crown, rallied from two sets down earlier in the day outlasting Pablo Carreno Busta to reach the finals.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles, Victoria Azarenka stunned Serena Williams in a three-set thriller, eventually defeating her in the semi-final on Friday and set up a US Open final clash against Naomi Osaka.

Azarenka fought back well to overcome Williams 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 under the roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium in the semi-final clash.

Azarenka will now take on Japan’s Naomi Osaka in Sunday’s final. The final would be a perfect matchup between one of the game’s young stars, Osaka, going from strength seeking her third tennis major trophy in two years, and a veteran, Azarenka, whose career is rejuvenated after several years, as the former world number one makes her first appearance in the final of a tennis major, since her defeat against Serena Williams in the US Open final of 2013.

Azarenka, 31, is brimming with confidence for the finals, as she said after the match “I knew it’s never over until I have another chance,”. The 31-year-old is having a fairytale run at the US Open, and looks very positive ahead of the finals.
