Guwahati: In the second edition of “Startup India Awards 2020” in the country, Assam has been categorised as ‘Emerging Startup Ecosystems’ for building an ecosystem to promote startups and enabling a way for the youth to venture into entrepreneurship. Assam along with Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have been conferred with the recognition.

The programme “States’ Startup Rankings 2019” held at the National Media Centre in New Delhi was chaired by Piyush Goyal, Union minister of commerce and industry through a video conference. Som Prakash, union minister of state for commerce and industry and Hardeep Puri, Union minister of state (Independent Charge) civil aviation also attended the meet.

Gujarat was declared as the best performer among states and Andaman & Nicobar Islands ranked at top among Union territories. As per the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the exercise is useful to develop innovation capacity of states and provide support in policy formulation and implementation. A total of 22 states and three UTs participated in the exercise.

“I am also very keen that Indian industry, Indian investors, high networth individuals, possibly mutual funds, insurance companies should also very seriously consider participating in this very exciting journey that our Indian startups are going through,” said minister Piyush Goyal upon releasing the rankings on Friday.

“Assam Startup – The Nest” has been able to nourish 76 startups so far, having provided them with dedicated mentorship, infrastructural support, market connections and crucial networking opportunities with India’s top investors.

Recently, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal had also handed over cheques worth Rs 3.3 crores to 31 incubated startups.

The Nest has been able to reach out to over 9,000 student entrepreneurs across the state and has signed 18 memorandum with various colleges, universities and academic institutions in Assam towards development.

The state government has said, “With over 5,000 young innovators and budding entrepreneurs at present trying to realize their entrepreneurial dreams, the Assam Startup initiative has sown the seeds for raising a fertile entrepreneurial landscape in Assam. The recognition as one of the best emerging startup ecosystems comes as a catalyst that will further motivate the stakeholders and accelerate the growth of the startup ecosystem in Assam.”
