Trinbago Knight Riders created history in Tarouba, becoming the first-ever team to complete a Caribbean Premier League season without a single defeat, as they lifted the title for the fourth time, defeating St. Lucia Zouks effortlessly in the final on Thursday.
Knight Riders skipper Keiron Pollard marshaled his resources brilliantly after winning the toss and deciding to have a bowl first. Zouks got off to a superb start racing away to 77 for one, before skipper Pollard led from the front with some brilliant figures of 4/30 restricting Zouks to 154 all out. Pollard’s variation of slower balls on a pitch where the ball gripped and came late turned out to be a nightmare for the Zouks batsmen as they lost their last six wickets for just 39 runs in 36 deliveries.
Mark Deyal (29 off 27 balls), Andre Fletcher (39 off 27 balls) and Roston Chase (22 off 14 balls) could not convert their starts, as Darren Sammy’s side missed out on crossing the 170-run mark, which would have been a par score for the finals.
Coming out to chase a modest target of 155, the in-form Knight Riders’ did not have a great start, as they lost two early wickets and were reduced to 19/2, before Simmons and Bravo steadied the innings for the Knight Riders. Eventually, Lendl Simmons (84* off 49 balls) and Darren Bravo(58* off 47 balls) sealed the match for the Knight Riders with 11 balls to spare, as they added an unbeaten 138-run match-winning partnership for the third-wicket .
With this victory the Trinbago Knight Riders became the first team in the history of Caribbean Premier League to win all the matches in a single season, and also the only team to be crowned the champions most number of times, with four title victories.
