Assam Police SHO killing: NIA files chargesheet

Tinsukia: The National Investigating Agency (NIA) has filed a charge-sheet before the special NIA court at Guwahati against seven accused persons for their involvement in the killing of Bordumsa police station officer-in-charge sub-inspector Bhaskar Kalita in Tinsukia district in May 2018.

The accused includes Bijit Gogoi alias Arunodoi Dahotia, Kanto Bora alias Rupam Asom, Santosh Gogoi, Jushinta Moran alias Yangkho Asom, Bubul Moran alias Tiger Asom, Dipankar Borah alias Ghutuk and Mamun Dihingia – the latter three have been arrested while the other four are absconding.

According to a press note by NIA, the agency said, the incident took place during a joint operation launched against militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) after a specific information regarding presence of ultra in a house at Kujupathar village.

“During the process of cordoning the suspected premises, ULFA militants hiding in the locked house started firing indiscriminately on the police which resulted in the death of Kalita.”

Taking advantage of poor light condition, the militants managed to escape in the nearby jungle and snatched AK-47 weapon of the deceased officer while running away, the agency said.

NIA took over the case and re-registered a case (RC 09/2018/NIA/GUW) in June 2019 prior to which the case was being investigated by Assam Police.

The agency said, “It has been established that a terrorist act has been committed by a group of ULFA terrorist in result of a conspiracy hatched by the accused persons on instructions of ULFA leader Aunodoi Dahotia.”

In pursuance of their conspiracy, the group of ULFA cadres came from Myanmar camp to Tinsukia, armed with weapons and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), with an aim of raising fund for the banned outfit and commit terrorist activity in various parts of Assam, the agency said, adding: Another militant, Rudreshwar Borah alias Jaan Asom, who has already died, was with them.

The case in under further investigation, it added.
