Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Organization activists on Wednesday held a silent protest demanding intervention of the state government over the alleged ongoing mismanagement at states lone COVID hospital, Govind Ballabh Pant hospital.
Speaking with reporters, senior advocate and human rights activist, Purushottam Roy Barman demanded immediate attention from the state government for the treatment of COVID positive patients.

“We do not want our fellow citizen’s lives at risk due to the mismanagement and failure of the state government and health department. People have understood that there is no proper treatment for the COVID-19 positive patients at GBP hospital,” Barman said.
He also said that the state government response has been inhuman against the positive patients and therefore recently reports and images of mismanagement have surfaced in different media platforms.
“We demand immediate appointment of health staff and workers. We also demand that the COVID Care Centres must be improved with more facilities and cash money for home isolation patients. Several promises were made in the last six months, but so far they have failed to develop the infrastructure for the treatment of COVID patients,” Barman added.

The group of activists observed a silent protest in Agartala with placards which reads—arranging PPE kits for doctors and all frontline warriors, stopping inhumane acts against COVID patients, why positive patients are dying without getting treated?
“A number of video clips and images have surfaced over the internet where the families can be heard raising allegations of death due to shortage of oxygen. The state and health department has failed and the situation at the state’s lone COVID hospital has become pathetic”, Barman said.
If the state government does not take immediate steps, we will request our citizens to step out and force the government to arrange proper facilities for the COVID patients, Roy Barman opined.

The human right activists also alleged that not just COVID patients, but other critical patients are not receiving proper health facilities from the public health system. They also sought immediate financial relief and availability of oxygen for treatment.
Meanwhile the state has reported a total of 16,736 positive cases with 161 COVID-19 deaths and 9,653 recovered cases so far.

Earlier, this week chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb held a meeting with the representatives of the private nursing homes and hospitals and the decision to start treating COVID patients was taken.
The state government has also decided to arrange oxygen facilities in the international fairground COVID Care Centre in Hapania. A team of expert doctors are also visiting the state for 10 days to assist and review the COVID management in the state.
