Shillong: Following the Meghalaya government’s idea to build a shopping mall at Barik point, the lone MLA of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Saleng A Sangma has suggested that the government should come up with a parking lot instead of a shopping mall at Barik point and also promote electric rickshaw which is eco-friendly.

Sangma suggested that Shillong lacks a proper parking space and the government should make Police Bazar a walking zone so that it reduces traffic jam and causes less pollution.

He was also of the opinion that the government should look at promoting electric rickshaw which is eco friendly.

“If a parking lot is built at Barik point, people can park their vehicles here and walk to Police Bazar. Or maybe the government can come up with e-rickshaw which is eco-friendly. In many places you will find that the main shopping hub is a walking zone but it is only here in Shillong you’ll find it packed with vehicles,” said Sagma.

It is to be mentioned that the government’s idea to build a shopping mall did not go well with the citizens of the state. Several known faces of the state criticized the government and said that the state needs more of greenery than buildings.

Earlier, Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong also mentioned that the idea to build a mall is to have a standard shopping mall since the state did not have one. He also added that the final decision concerning Barik point would only be finalised after the Cabinets decision.
