Now, Tripura cabinet ministers to oversee COVID-19 care at GBP Hospital

Agartala: Amid the alleged mismanagement and negligence of duty by a section of officers and health workers in the state health department, the state government has decided to depute cabinet ministers on rotation basis at Gobind Ballabh Pant (GBP) COVID-19 hospital here so that patients get proper attention in COVID-19 treatment.

Speaking with reporters, state government spokesman and education minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the state government is very much concerned over the number of deaths being reported in the state. Every death is unfortunate as the doctors and administration are trying their level best to save lives, he said.

“We have received numerous complaints regarding negligence of duty by some of the officials at the GBP hospital’s COVID-19 wards. Number of deaths is increasing. However, nobody should die due to negligence,” Nath said.

If the reports of negligence keeps on coming then, the ministers will take turns and stay inside the hospital to monitor the work of the administration and health staff in the COVID-19 management, Nath said.

Earlier, a number of complaints on mismanagement from the COVID-19 wards have been reported. A three-day-old baby had allegedly succumbed to his injuries sustained while doctors tried to collect his swab samples last month.

The mother of the infant had later filed a written complaint with the New Capital Complex police station and sought an inquiry from the state government along with a compensation amount of Rs 10 lakh.

The former health minister Sudip Roy Barman also pointed out a number of loopholes in the health department and alleged that a number of patients have succumbed to the virus unattended by the doctors. He also demanded a full-time health minister to coordinate the management at this crucial time.

Meanwhile, a total of 2,92,269 samples have been collected, out of which 2,88296 were tested and 14,524 persons have tested positive for the virus, with 5,884 active cases and 8,483 recovered cases.

The positivity rate stands at 4.80 percent, test per million at 72,117 while the recovery rate stands at 61.40 percent and mortality rate at 0.97 percent.

Earlier, on September 2, the chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb visited the GBP hospital to review the preparedness and situation of the COVID-19 managment.

He also held meeting with all the doctors, health staff and administrative officials for hours and emphasized upon improving the management, coordination between the officials.
