England pulled off a nail-biting victory against Australia in the first T20I in Southampton on Friday

England made a stunning comeback to beat Australia just by two runs in a nail-biting finish, in the first T20 international in Southampton on Friday.

Cruising towards victory at 124/1, the visitors needed 39 runs off six overs with nine wickets in hand, before they managed to mess up the pretty easy chase as they lost quick wickets and were left needing 15 off Tom Curran’s final over, who held his nerve at the death to seal a brilliant win for the hosts.

Put in to bat first, England, fresh from their series win over Pakistan, got off to a great start as opener Jos Buttler smashed 44 off 29 balls and Dawid Malan continuing his remarkably consistent form with a superb 66, took England to a respectable total of 162/7.

Australia, in reply, got off to a rollicking start, with a brilliant 98-run opening stand by David Warner(58) and Aaron Finch (46) as they showed no signs of rustiness in their first game since March.

Soon after Smith’s dismissal at 124-2, the Australian line-up collapsed leaving them at 148-6. Marcus Stoinis kept the game alive by depositing one out of the ground off Curran but with five runs needed off the last ball, Stoinis could only manage a couple of runs, eventually, England winning the first T20 of the three-match series in one of the most dramatic fashion.

The English skipper was all praise for the bowlers in the post-match conference. “The bowlers really came good in the last eight overs. It’s always difficult coming in, under lights, pressure on, on a slow wicket,” said the England skipper Eoin Morgan.

The second T20 will be played at the same venue on September 6.
