Lionel Messi reportedly signs a record deal worth €700m (£623m) with Manchester City. Reports of Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona are at peak doing the rounds, after Messi notified Barcelona last week that he intends to walk away from the club.
Since Messi’s announcement that he wants to leave Barcelona, things have not turned out very well for the Argentine legend. Messi wanted to walk away by exercising a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for free at the end of each season, but , La Liga, on Sunday, issued a statement saying that the release clause is still valid, and Messi cannot leave for free.
But now, if reports are to be believed, the 33-year-old football great has agreed financial terms on a five-year contract worth a total of €700m (£623m) with Manchester City.
This whopping deal would mean that the Argentina Captain will be the highest-paid individual in the history of the sport.
It is reported that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner will spend three seasons at the Etihad before joining City Football Group’s (CFG) New York City FC for two years, and he could be offered an equity stake in CFG as part of his package.
Barca’s new coach Ronald Koeman believes that if Messi does not want to stay with Barcelona, it would be better to get him out as soon as possible.
Messi’s father and representative, Jorge Messi, yesterday flew from Argentina, to Spain for showdown talks with Barcelona chiefs today.
Earlier in the week, Messi failed to report for the team’s COVID testing at Barcelona’s training complex on Sunday, which eventually meant that he was also not a part of Ronald Koeman’s first training session as the club’s new head coach on Monday evening.
