New Delhi: Former President Pranab Mukherjee passed away at a hospital in New Delhi on Monday. He was 84. His son Abhijit Mukherjee took to Twitter to announce the news.
He wrote, “With a Heavy Heart , this is to inform you that my father Shri #PranabMukherjee has just passed away inspite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers ,duas & prarthanas from people throughout India ! I thank all of You.”
The veteran Congress leader was admitted to Army’s Research & Referral Hospital in New Delhi. He underwent a brain surgery on August 10 after a clot was discovered.
Mukherjee had visited the hospital for some other health issues, but was found positive for COVID-19 upon testing. Taking to Twitter on August 10, he had announced the development.
He had been on ventilator support and in critical condition since then. His son Abhijit on Wednesday tweeted that his father was “haemodynamically stable”. However, he asked everyone to continue prayers. He breathed his last at RR Hospital on Monday.
Mukherjee served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017. In a political career spanning five decades, he had been a senior leader in the Congress and occupied several ministerial portfolios in the Centre.
Prior to his election as President, Mukherjee was Union finance minister from 2009 to 2012. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna — India’s highest civilian honour — in 2019.
Mukherjee is survived by his two sons and a daughter. His wife, Suvra Mukherjee, died on August 18, 2015, aged 74, of heart failure while Mukherjee was still in office as the President of India.
