Guwahati: Proving that there’s literally nothing they can’t do, popular K-pop band BTS has made history again by winning Best Pop in the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards earlier on Monday. They are the first-ever Asian act to win the title.
The South Korean septet won the award for their song ON, a recent February release from their fourth album ‘Map of Soul: 7.’ The song which is a powerful anthem for self-empowerment beat Halsey, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers, and Justin Beiber and Quavo for the Best Pop crown.
BTS comprises of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, and this year they were nominated for VMA’s Best Pop, Best Group, Best K-pop, and Best Choreography categories. The band bagged all the four awards.
The band did not disappoint in their stage number in the 2020 VMAs as they annihilated the stage with their recent release, Dynamite. Dressed in sharp seventies-style suites and dancing through the streets of New York (thanks to the massive virtual set-up filmed in Seoul) the septet showed their powerful stage presence and smooth choreography skills (something they are quite popular for) in their first-ever English-language track.
Even with the new release aka Dynamite, the band broke numerous records. On August 21, when the official music video was released, the premiere on YouTube drew 3 million concurrent viewers, something which has never been recorded in the history of YouTube. Additionally, the video also became the most viewed video in 24 hours by raking in 101.1 million views.
