Scuffle broke out between BJP and Congress supporters around 6 pm in Sabroom area of South Tripura district on Wednesday

Agartala: Week after violence between ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters and Congress workers in Sepahijala district, BJP and opposition CPIM supporters clashed on Wednesday.

At least 12 people were injured as supporters of the two parties fought pitched battles in several places during the statewide protest called by the opposition party demanding employment, improved public distribution and health care among other things.

In Agartala, the demonstration was led by the opposition leader and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

Speaking with reporters, assistant inspector general Subrata Chakraborty said that 12 persons sustained minor injuries, while five persons were seriously injured in the violence.

“Around 4,000 people were arrested from across the state by the Tripura police. Force was used to disperse an agitating mob in Sabroom at South Tripura district and Khowai district. Additional security has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation”, Chakraborty said.

Speaking with reporters, CPIM state secretary Gautam Das said that the supporters on Wednesday held demonstrations in 282 locations where thousands of people gathered placing 16 point charter of demands.

“Our party workers were attacked by both the ruling BJP and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura workers in different locations including Rupaichari area in Sabroom, South Tripura district.

The CPI (M) leader also informed that they have filed FIR with the police and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

Reacting on the claims made by the opposition CPIM, ruling BJP spokespersons Nabendu Bhattacharjee accused the opposition of instigating violence across the state in a pre-planned manner.

The opposition leader and former chief minister Manik Sarkar himself has led the protest in Agartala where hundreds of people had gathered violating the imposed COVID-19 restrictions.

“Five BJP workers sustained injuries in a clash at Rupaichari area in Sabroom when the supporters of CPIM carried out a pre-planned attack upon the ruling party workers. The attack was instigated by two former MDC namely Arun Tripura and Chathui Mog who are absconding now”, Bhattacharjee said. He also said that an FIR against the leaders of opposition CPIM for pre-planning the whole incident.
