Guwahati: West-Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo became the first bowler ever to pick up 500 wickets in T20 cricket. The pacer achieved the feat during the ongoing Caribbean Premier League match between Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Zouks on Wednesday.
Fourteen years after making his debut in the format, the all-rounder playing his 459th T20 match, was just one shy of the landmark when he dismissed Zouk’s opener Rahkeem, Cornwall, to pick up his 500th T20 wicket. It was also his 100th wicket in the CPL, another feat achieved by none.
Bravo is followed by the Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga in the list of leading wicket-takers in T20 cricket, with 390 wickets from 295 matches.
“First of all thanks to the almighty god for allowing me to be the first,” Bravo said during a touchline interview with broadcaster Star Sports. “To be able to achieve that right here at home – this is where I started playing cricket you know? At age 8. It’s where it all started for me and I can’t be happier to get that 500 here at the Queen’s Park Oval.”, Bravo further added.
Bravo was also the first bowler to pick up 300 wickets(August 2014) and 400 wickets(December 2017) in T20 cricket. Australian pacer, Dirk Nannes was the first to 100(2010) and 200(2013) wickets milestone in the format.
Having approximately represented 20 different teams, Bravo continues to be a star attraction in the shortest format of the game. He is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League with 147 wickets and the highest wicket-taker in the Caribbean Premier League with 101 wickets.
The pacer has an impressive bowling average of 24.62 and an economy rate of 8.25 in T20 cricket.
Dwayne Bravo is expected to join the Chennai Super Kings’ squad in the UAE for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, as soon as the Caribbean Premier League gets over. The final of the Caribbean Premier League is scheduled to be held on September 10, 2020.
