Shillong: The Meghalaya government on Friday held a meeting with MLAs from the East Khasi Hills district concerning the COVID-19 situation in the state.
Several MLAs were part of the meeting held at Secretariat in Shillong.
Addressing the media, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma said that several issues were raised by the MLAs. After suggestions were made it was decided that committees headed by MLAs will be formed for coordination with COVID management committees within the constituencies. This will ensure proper coordination among everyone involved in the COVID-19 management process.
“We will act according to the issues raised by the MLAs. The exercise to meet MLAs will also be carried out in other districts. We will send other Cabinet ministers and take up the matter. At the same time we have asked the different committees and MLAs that in the long run we also need to look at the entire aspect and the kind of impact COVID-19 could have in the state,” said Sangma.
He also informed that another aspect was looked into at options on how we could sensitize people to look at home quarantine wherever it’s possible even in positive cases also to look at the possibility of having community corona centres wherever its possible in line with the community and local leaders.
Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, who represents the East Shillong constituency, said that it was a fruitful meeting with the government.
“We want to make one thing clear that Shillong might be heading to a crisis. If that crisis occurs, are we prepared? What are the steps that need to be taken? So, this discussion with the chief minister was based primarily on a preparedness level. Several issues were brought up like unavailability of quarantine centres for individuals who will now probably test in large numbers positive. What do we do, what are the roles of the community? We have to prepare for the worst case scenario. So this discussion today was basically to chalk down all the probable situation that will occur on the near future,” said Lyngdoh.
