The recovered contraband items are worth Rs 1.6 crore in Manipur

Imphal: Troops of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (south) arrested four individuals in connection with illegally transported commercial goods and contraband items. The recovered items are worth about Rs 1.6 crore, said the official.

As per a statement, the security forces set up a mobile vehicle check-post along the Yairipok-Hongbi road based on receiving inputs about the movement of illegal items in the area on Tuesday.

Four persons travelling in two vehicles were intercepted following suspicious of carrying illegal items. On thorough search of the vehicles, the troops recovered 34,500 packets of WIN cigarettes, 1,000 packets of Esse Light cigarettes, 11 boxes of mosquito repellents, four boxes of tinned fish and six Mikko mosquito repellents, it said.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Benjamin, 52, of Khundung, Ningthar, 55 and Somi, 48, both residence of Chakma and Amzad, 40, from Lilong in Thoubal district.

Along with the recovered contraband items, the arrested persons have handed over to the customs and excise department, Pallel for further legal action.
