Guwahati: Sevilla wrecked Manchester United’s hopes of ending the season with silverware, as the Spanish club beat the Red Devils 2-1 to advance to the Europa League final in Cologne, on Sunday.

United lost their third semi-final this season despite taking an early lead of 1-0, when Bruno Fernandes scored their 22nd penalty of the season just nine minutes into the game, after Marcus Rashford was fouled by Diego Carlos. Sevilla, the Europa League specialists, were quick to respond with an equalizer from Suso in the 26th minute, when the former Liverpool forward swept a finish past David de Gea at the far post.

The game seemed evenly poised going into half time with both the teams fairing well with 1-1 on the board. Going into the second half, United missed a succession of chances early on, as Sevilla keeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero, denying Anthony Martial several times.

United’s fate was sealed when Luuk de Jong swept home a cross from Jesus Navas, thus providing Sevilla with a game-winner in the 79th minute to secure their place in the final.

Following the match, United defender Harry Maguire said: “It’s difficult. The boys are devastated. We created numerous chances. The best team lost. They punished us for missing chances. They didn’t make many chances to be honest.”

Manchester United were beaten for the third time in the semi finals of a competition this season, following losses at the same stage in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Sevilla will now take on either Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League final on Friday.
