Imphal: A video of a woman in labour being rushed to the hospital in Manipur has gone viral on social media. What caught everybody’s attention was the visual of a dozen-odd youths of Dunong village in Tamenglong district carrying the heavily pregnant woman on a bamboo stretcher while trailing through the narrow path.
According to the locals, Dunong village with around 30 households is situated near the Nagaland border. PHC Tamei, which is the nearest health centre from the remote village, is located at a distance of around 54 km at Tamei sub-division.
In the video, some of them were seen falling off on the bushes while crossing the narrow pathways, indicating the pathetic condition of the sole connectivity from the village to the other parts of the state.

As per reports, due to absence of proper road connectivity, locals were compelled to carry the woman on the stretcher and walk for hours before reaching the nearest health centre at Tamei sub-division.
In the video, at least a dozen youths are seen carrying the patient while a similar number of people are following them, which seems to change the shift if the other party gets exhausted.
For many years, residents living in the remote areas have appealed to the state government to oversee the connectivity issue, however, their complaints have fallen into deaf ears, said sources.

Soon after they reached the health centre, they were referred for Imphal since there was some delivery complication. However, due to financial constraint, the family decided to take the risk. Fortunately, both the mother and a baby are safe by God’s mercy, added the sources.
