Guwahati: Shakhtar Donetsk booked a spot in the Europa League semis after a thumping 4-1 victory over FC Basel while Sevilla made their way into the semis after knocking out Wolves by 1-0 on Tuesday.
Riding on a goal each from Junior Moraes, Taison, Alan Patrick and Dodo, Shakhtar Donetsk cruised past FC Basel with a thumping 4-1 victory in Gelsenkirchen, on Tuesday, resulting in the club’s third time entry into the Europa League semis. The Ukrainian side took an early lead in the match with Junior Moraes scoring a goal just two minutes into game before Taison doubled their lead in the 22nd minute.
About 75 minutes into the game, Alan Patrick fired one home from the penalty spot after Taison was fouled by the Basel defender Yannick Marchand, and then Dodo added a fourth for Shakhtar in the final minutes before Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored a late consolation.
Meanwhile, in Duisburg, Sevilla went past Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race to the semis by a 1-0 win, on Tuesday. Wolves tried to get an early upper hand in the match with some heavy forward pressure. Although it didn’t work out as expected, they were able to maintain equal possession in the first half. Sevilla seemed to have regained control in the match from the moment Raul Jimenez failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity to take a lead, after he missed a penalty shot, his first miss after 18 successful shots. After regaining control in the game, Sevilla’s wave of attack yielded corner after corner as they seemed to dominate every opportunity before Jorge Ocampos headed a valuable one into nets, giving them the all important lead of 1-0, just before the 90 minute mark, thus emerging as the winners for the night.
Shakhtar Donetsk will face off against Inter Milan, while Sevilla will take on Manchester United in the semi finals, on Monday, August 17.
