Imphal: Manipur Assembly Speaker Yumnam Khemchand on Tuesday accepted the resignation letter of five Congress MLAs.

The resignation letter was submitted by six Congress elected legislators; however, the Speaker has kept MLA Paonam Brojen’s resignation notice on hold since a disqualification case against him is still pending in the Tribunal hearing.

As per latest reports, hearing for his disqualification case has been fixed for August 14.

Consequent upon the resignation of the five members from the membership of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, the five assembly constituencies are lying vacant with effect from the forenoon of Tuesday, 11 August 2020, read the statement signed by Manipur Legislative Assembly secretary M Ramani Devi.

The five Congress MLAs whose resignation from the Manipur Assembly has been approved are Okram Henry Singh of Wangkhei Assembly constituency, Oinam Lukhoi Singh of Wangoi, Md Abdul Nasir of Lilong, Ngamthang Haokip of Saitu and Ginsuanhau of Singhat.

Earlier, MLA Henry Singh had informed EastMojo that they took the step since they had lost trust in the party leadership under CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh.

Despite Congress being the single largest party in the state in 2017 assembly, the party failed to form the government due to the leadership, said Henry.

MLA Henry and few others would be joining the ruling BJP party and others are likely to go with a different party.

With this latest political development, the 60-member in the House has now got the strength of 48, including the Speaker.
