Sources say that the DGP has been suffering from fever since Sunday

Guwahati: Director general of police (DGP), Assam Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has been tested positive for novel coronavirus on Monday.

Sources say that the DGP has been suffering from fever since Sunday and had undergone tests on Monday of which his results came out to be positive. Along with Mahanta, his diver has also been tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

However, his security guards have tested negative for the virus. DGP Mahanta is now undergoing home isolation.

Last month the DGP’s security, Swapan Brahma, who resides in the Pragjyotish Housing Complex, also tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a free pulse oximeter and first-line supportive medicine will be provided to those patients opting to stay at home isolation in Guwahati from Monday.

Additionally, in the last 24 hours, Assam detected a total of 1,123 COVID-19 positive cases out of which 240 came from Kamrup (Metro) and 121 came from Jorhat.

This takes the total state tally to 58,837 out of which 16,364 are active cases and 42,325 have been discharged so far. The death toll of the state stands at 145.
