Bayern Munich are in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after beating Chelsea 4-1 in the second leg of the tournament, with 7-1 win on aggregate, while Barcelona kept their Champions League dream alive, as they went on to defeat Napoli 3-1 in the second leg, and advance ahead in the race to the quarters with a 4-2 win on aggregate.
With Robert Lewandowski scoring an early goal with just 9 minutes into the game gave Bayern the exact start they would have wanted, at Allianz Arena in Munich, on Saturday. It was a Lewandowski show throughout for Bayern, as the Polish set up Ivan Perisic for Bayern’s second, before towering a brilliant header for Bayern’s fourth goal of the day.
Although, Tammy Abraham offered some hope for Chelsea with an away goal after Bayern’s second, it did not prove enough for them, as it was the only one the visitors could score, before Bayern scored another two, taking the lead to 4-1, courtesy a volley and a header from Tolisso and Lewandowski respectively. Bayern became the first team to start a UEFA Champions League campaign with eight consecutive wins in the competition’s current format. They scored 31 goals.
Meanwhile, at the Camp Nou, in Spain, Barcelona smashed their Seire A opponent, Napoli by 3-1. Riding on goals from Luis Suarez, Clement Lenglet and Lionel Messi, Barcelona built an early advantage, going into halftime with a 3-1 lead. Lionel Messi stole the show on Saturday, when the Argentine great scored a fantastic goal with an exquisite solo effort, bamboozling half of the Napoli team on the way, in the 23rd minute of the game. Barcelona called it the goal of the season. The halftime score of 3-1 remained unchanged in the second half, ensuring Barcelona’s spot in the quarter final.
Barcelona will now face Bayern Munich in the quarter-final, next Friday, in Lisbon. This match will be played in a “bubble” format of tight security to prevent a coronavirus outbreak from derailing the competition’s finale.
